Three West African nations—Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—announced plans last year to introduce a new currency, aiming to reduce reliance on the US dollar and the CFA franc, a colonial-era holdover from French rule. The move, inspired by the BRICS alliance’s push for de-dollarization, was spearheaded by military-led governments following a series of coups in the region.

General Abdourahmane Tiani, leader of Niger’s junta, confirmed discussions among the three nations to abandon existing currencies in favor of a shared alternative. The countries also established the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), a mutual defense pact, signaling deeper regional coordination.

No further updates have been issued since the initial announcement, leaving the currency proposal’s status uncertain. The initiative reflects growing global sentiment against dollar dominance, though implementation challenges remain acute for economies under military rule.
